The choice of sealer is highly dependant upon the substrate being sealed, the carrier and the ambient conditions expected during application. Silicon Derivatives has prepared several application and selection guides to assist in the selection of "right sealant for the right application".
See our technical library and product applications web page for access to these guides. The following provides a quick reference guide to select the type of carrier and/or active ingredient:
Water Base Sealers:
- Usually have no odor, or light odor.
- A consideration for indoor applications where people and pets cannot leave during the application.
- Usually have little effect on surface color.
- Are more tolerant of moisture remaining in the surface during sealer application.
Solvent Base Sealers:
- Usually penetrate better due to smaller molecular structure.
- Can strengthen soft surfacing (if the solids portion is of the type to do that).
- Must be applied to a dry surface, so that there is no moisture to interfere with sealer penetration.
Can enhance natural surface colors.
Siliconates and Linseed Oil Sealers
- Natural and renewable with low environmental impact
- Low Cost
- Excellent for indoor application
All water-based penetrating sealers contain less than 2% PCC’s and have been formulated to comply with US EPA AAIM VOC regulations.
PSWB 05 – An economical, multi-purpose 5% siloxane solution that can be applied to new or restored surfaces including low porosity concrete – split-faced block, brick, adobe, limestone, granite, sandstone, terra cotta, stuccos & mortar. It is an excellent block sealer. It can be used on most vertical exterior, above-grade masonry surfaces.
PSWB 10 – A 10% siloxane solution that can be applied on medium porosity, vertical or horizontal masonry surfaces. It can be applied to new or restored surfaces including high porosity concrete, split-faced block, brick, adobe, limestone, granite, sandstone, terra cotta, stuccos & mortar. It is environmentally friendly and safe for plants and animals.
PSWB 20 – A 20% siloxane solution that can be applied on high porosity, vertical or horizontal masonry surfaces. It can be applied to new or restored surfaces including high porosity concrete, split-faced block, brick, adobe, limestone, granite, sandstone, terra cotta, stuccos & mortar. It is environmentally friendly and safe for plants and animals.
PSWB LI - Lithium enhanced siloxane solution for high limestone content plasters to prevent staining and reduce mottling.
