Silicon Derivatives was founded in 2000 as a product development company focusing on the formulation of ambient-cured ceramic coatings and surface treatments. In September of 2001, Silicon Derivatives acquired the assets of Advanced Particle Technologies and began the production of a thermally- cured, ceramic coated, quartz aggregate for application in swimming pool plasters and commercial flooring.
Since that time, Silicon Derivatives' ceramic coated aggregates have proven their resistance to acids and alkalis in nearly 200,000 swimming pools and several million square feet of commercial flooring. Silicon Derivatives' customers have included national pool builders such as Blue Haven, Pebbletech, and Shasta Pools, and pool and spa distributors such as National Pool Tile.
In February 2004, Aggregate Concepts acquired the Silicon Derivatives ceramic coated aggregates plant in St Augustine FL and the marketing rights for these coated aggregate products to the flooring and pool and spa market. This divestiture allowed Silicon Derivatives management to complete the formulation and commercialization of an ambient-cured ceramic polymer technology for multiple industrial and commercial applications.
These coatings and surface treatments are now advanced to the point that they can be employed to replace many thermally cured silicate coatings and/or significantly enhance the attributes of traditional urethane, epoxy, and acrylic polymer coatings. As they gain acceptance, the demand for petroleum products will decrease, volatile organic compound (VOC) emission will be reduced, and our carbon foot print will begin to be erased with sand
